BC Parks books 3 months ahead, not 4: new dates open daily at 7am PT. How to work out your booking day, long-weekend dates, Berg Lake's one-day launch and day passes.
Last checked: October 2026. BC Parks' rules below are from its own pages as of that date. Long-weekend and Berg Lake dates for 2027 are expected, based on 2026; BC Parks hadn't announced them.
The rule: three months, 7am PT
BC Parks doesn't have one opening day for the season. It has a rolling window:
- Frontcountry camping: "You can make a reservation for your entire stay up to three months before your desired arrival date." New dates become available at 7am Pacific Time daily (BC Parks frontcountry camping).
- Backcountry campgrounds: same three months, from 7am PT on the first day of the booking period (BC Parks backcountry reservations).
- Group sites open further ahead (12 months, per our research notes; check the group camping page for your site).
"But it says four months"
It used to. From 2023 to 2025 the window was four months, and plenty of blogs, forum posts and even some older park pages still say so. If you plan around four months, you'll show up a month early and find the dates greyed out. As of October 2026, BC Parks' own reservation pages say three months.
How to work out your booking day
Take your arrival date, go back three calendar months to the same day number, and be ready at 7am PT. You can book your whole stay at once from that morning, even nights that are later than three months out.
BC Parks' own example: to arrive July 25 and stay four nights, you can book all four nights from 7am PT on April 25.
| You want to arrive | Your booking morning (7am PT) |
|---|
| Friday May 21, 2027 | Sunday February 21, 2027 |
| Thursday July 1, 2027 | Thursday April 1, 2027 |
| Friday July 30, 2027 | Friday April 30, 2027 |
| Monday August 2, 2027 | Sunday May 2, 2027 |
| Friday September 3, 2027 | Thursday June 3, 2027 |
Month-end arrivals. BC Parks' pages don't give an example for arrivals on the 29th, 30th or 31st when the earlier month is shorter (for example May 31, three months after which would be "February 31"). Don't assume; check the calendar on camping.bcparks.ca a few days before and see which dates are bookable.
Long weekends
On statutory holiday weekends BC Parks requires a minimum of three nights: Friday to Sunday nights when the holiday is a Monday, Thursday to Saturday nights when it's a Friday.
In 2026, the long-weekend blocks opened on these days (from our research notes, matching the three-month rule counted from the first night):
| Long weekend 2026 | Opened |
|---|
| Victoria Day | Feb 15 |
| Canada Day | Apr 1 |
| BC Day | Apr 30 |
| Labour Day | Jun 4 |
For 2027, expect the same logic: three months before the first night of the long-weekend block. Victoria Day 2027 is Monday May 24, BC Day Monday August 2, Labour Day Monday September 6, and Canada Day falls on a Thursday.
Other rules worth knowing
- Stay limit: most parks allow 14 nights per calendar year in total; Porteau Cove and sẁiẁs Park allow seven.
- Last bookings: for frontcountry, at most parks you must book before 8pm two days before arrival. For backcountry, until 5pm PT on arrival day (3pm for Berg Lake).
- Changes: at most parks, no changes after 8pm two days before arrival. If you booked on the first possible morning, you can't change the dates of that reservation (BC Parks' example: July 1 arrival booked on April 1).
The exceptions
| What | How it opens |
|---|
| Berg Lake Trail | All peak-season dates on one day at 7am PT. For 2026 that was Tuesday Dec 2, 2025. 2027 expected around early Dec 2026. See Berg Lake 2027 |
| Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit | Opened the same morning as Berg Lake for 2026 |
| Day-use passes (Joffre Lakes, Garibaldi, Golden Ears) | Free, released at 7am PT two days before your visit. See Joffre and Garibaldi |
| Garibaldi, Joffre, Mount Assiniboine, Golden Ears, Manning, Cathedral backcountry | The general three-month rule |
Book three months out, then watch
The three-month morning is when the most popular BC sites tend to fill, especially summer weekends. After that, sites come back when people cancel, and the BC Parks cancellation rules give them a strong reason to do it more than seven days before arrival.
Canada Camp Alerts watches a set of BC Parks facilities, including Alice Lake, Porteau Cove, Gold Creek at Golden Ears, Garibaldi Lake, Lake Magog and the Berg Lake Trail. Set a watch on the facility page for the nights you want. We alert you when a night goes from booked out, or not yet released, to open, meaning any site at that facility is free that night. A watch on nights that aren't bookable yet fires when they're released. We don't check that one site is free for your whole stay, and we don't match party size or equipment, so check on camping.bcparks.ca before you pay.
- Free: one watch for one night, email, 15 minutes after pass holders.
- Season pass: C$25 once, 12 months, no auto-renew. Up to 10 watches, date ranges, instant email, Telegram and browser push.
