BC Parks refunds in full more than 7 days out; inside 7 days you lose a night, on arrival day two. Berg Lake's 14-day and Bowron's 28-day rules, fees, and when sites come back.
Last checked: October 2026. Rules are from BC Parks' cancellation windows and cancellations and refunds pages as of that date.
BC Parks doesn't have one cancellation rule. It has a different window for each kind of reservation, and those windows decide when people give sites back. If you're trying to get into a sold-out campground, the windows tell you when to look.
The windows, in one table
| Reservation type | Full refund of camping fees if you cancel | Inside the window |
|---|
| Frontcountry camping | More than 7 days before arrival | Within 7 days: 1 night's fee deducted. On arrival day: 2 nights deducted |
| Cathedral, E.C. Manning, Garibaldi, Golden Ears, Mount Assiniboine, Joffre Lakes campgrounds | More than 7 days before, minus $6 per tent pad | Within 7 days: 1 night's fee per person + $6 per pad. Arrival day: 2 nights per person + $6 per pad |
| Berg Lake Trail | More than 14 days before, minus $6 per tent pad | Removing nights or changing dates: up to 2 nights' fees per person. Cancelled trips: no refund |
| Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit | More than 28 days before | No changes and no refunds for cancelled trips |
| Group camping and picnicking | More than 28 days before | Camping fees not refunded (the $6 fee is waived) |
| Other backcountry and canoe circuits | Cancel until 5pm on arrival day | Refunds under the general policy |
| Backcountry permit registration | Non-refundable | Changes not allowed |
The fees that never come back
From the cancellations and refunds page:
- Transaction fees are generally not refunded, nor are change and cancellation fees or call-centre surcharges.
- A $6 (plus tax) cancellation fee applies per campsite or tent pad when you get a refund. If you get no refund of camping fees, there's no cancellation fee.
- Changing your arrival date counts as cancelling the nights you give up.
- At most parks, you can't change a reservation after 8pm two days before arrival.
- To apply for a refund, you must do it within three months of your scheduled arrival.
- A full refund of camping and transaction fees applies only if BC Parks closes the campground.
- Poor air quality can qualify, but only if you cancel within one week of arrival and the AQHI meets BC Parks' threshold.
Frontcountry, step by step
Say you've booked three nights at a BC Parks campground and something comes up.
| You cancel | You get back |
|---|
| 10 days before | All three nights' camping fees, minus the $6 cancellation fee. Transaction fees stay with BC Parks |
| 5 days before | Two nights' fees (one night deducted), minus $6 |
| On arrival day, before checking in (until 11:59pm) | One night's fee (two deducted), minus $6 |
| After the arrival date | Changes and cancellations can't be made online or by phone; refunds aren't automatic or guaranteed |
When sites reappear
The windows create predictable moments when sold-out sites come back. This is our reading of the rules, not yet measured data:
- Frontcountry: around 8 days before arrival. Anyone who knows they can't go gets their money back if they cancel before the 7-day mark. The week before that cutoff is the main window.
- Arrival day. Within 7 days the penalty is one night; on arrival day it's two. Some people still cancel late, and BC Parks lets you cancel until 11:59pm on arrival day if you haven't checked in. Late cancellations can show up for same-day or next-day arrivals.
- Garibaldi, Joffre, Assiniboine, Golden Ears, Manning, Cathedral backcountry: around 8 days out, for the same reason, and the penalty is per person, which hurts big groups more.
- Berg Lake: around 15 days out. Inside 14 days a cancelled trip gets nothing back. See Berg Lake 2027.
- Bowron Lake: around 29 days out. Inside 28 days there are no changes and no refunds.
- Group sites: around 29 days out.
Remember the booking side too: frontcountry dates first open three months ahead at 7am PT. See the BC Parks 3-month window guide. Between that morning and the cancellation cliffs, there's a long stretch when sites trickle back as plans change.
BC Parks' own "Notify me"
BC Parks has a free "Notify me" feature. Per our research, it's email only, allows up to 5 alerts, and covers frontcountry only, not backcountry. If you need one frontcountry campground and don't mind email, try it first.
Watching with Canada Camp Alerts
Canada Camp Alerts watches a set of BC Parks facilities, frontcountry and backcountry, including Alice Lake, Porteau Cove, Ruckle Park, Gold Creek, Garibaldi Lake, Lake Magog and the Berg Lake Trail. The list is on /parks.
Set a watch on the facility page for your nights. We alert you when a night goes from booked out to open, meaning any site or pad at that facility is free that night, judged night by night. We don't check that one site is free across your whole stay, and we don't match party size or equipment, so check on camping.bcparks.ca before you pay. We don't book or hold sites.
- Free: one watch for one night, email, 15 minutes after pass holders.
- Season pass: C$25 once, 12 months, no auto-renew. Up to 10 watches, date ranges, instant email, Telegram and browser push.
