The whole Berg Lake summer goes on sale on one morning. Here's what happened for 2026, what to expect for 2027, and why the 14-day cancellation rule matters if you miss out.
Last checked: October 2026. BC Parks had not announced the 2027 opening date when we wrote this. Dates marked "expected" are based on the 2026 pattern, not on an announcement.
The short version
- Berg Lake doesn't use BC Parks' rolling three-month window. All peak-season dates open on a single day, at 7am Pacific.
- For the 2026 season that day was Tuesday, December 2, 2025, for a reservation season of May 27 to September 29, 2026 (BC government news release, Nov 20, 2025).
- For 2027, the opening is expected around early December 2026, based on that pattern. It has not been announced. Watch the Mount Robson Park page, where BC Parks says the date is announced each year.
- Inside 14 days of arrival, a cancelled trip gets no refund. That's the cancellation cliff, and it shapes when sold-out pads come back.
How opening day worked for 2026
The 2025 season was different. After years of flood repairs, the trail reopened and bookings for 2025 started on April 2, 2025. For 2026 BC Parks moved the opening to early December, so the whole summer was on sale more than five months ahead. The same release covered the Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit, which opened the same morning for a May 15 to September 27 season.
BC Parks says the trail "has been completely repaired after closures caused by extreme weather", and also warns that "long-term trail closures have been common in recent years" (Mount Robson Park). Check the advisories before you book and again before you go.
| 2025 season | 2026 season | 2027 season |
|---|
| Reservations opened | April 2, 2025 | Tue Dec 2, 2025, 7am PT | Expected around early Dec 2026 (not announced) |
| Reservation season | from June 26, 2025 | May 27 to Sep 29, 2026 | not announced |
The seven camps
From BC Parks' backcountry reservations page, with tent pads per camp:
| Camp | Tent pads |
|---|
| Kinney Lake | 18 |
| Whitehorn | 22 |
| Emperor Falls | 9 |
| Marmot | 7 |
| Berg Lake | 26 |
| Rearguard | 6 |
| Robson Pass | 15 |
That's 103 pads on a trail where most people want two or three nights near Berg Lake itself. Berg Lake, Marmot and Rearguard sit closest to the lake and the glacier views; Kinney Lake and Whitehorn are the first-night camps on the way in. You book a camp for each night, so a typical itinerary might be Whitehorn, then Berg Lake for two nights, then out.
Camping is only allowed on tent pads at the designated campgrounds. Day-hiking needs no permit and has no fee. Cycling is allowed on the first 7 km, to Kinney Lake.
Fees and limits
From the same BC Parks page, as of October 2026:
- Camping fee: $10 per adult (16+) per night, $5 per youth (6 to 15), free under 6. Tax included.
- Transaction fee: charged per tent pad, per night, for up to three nights, to a maximum of $18 per pad, plus tax.
- Non-resident fee: the page lists a $20 non-resident fee for visitors from outside B.C.
- Phone bookings: $5 surcharge. The call centre (1-800-689-9025) is open 7am to 7pm PT.
- Party size: up to two tent pads per reservation, maximum 12 people.
- Last-minute bookings: you can book until 3pm PT on your arrival date if a pad is free.
Before opening morning
- Plan two or three itineraries. Your first choice of Berg Lake nights will likely be gone in the first minutes. Have a version that shifts by a day, and one that swaps Berg Lake for Marmot or Rearguard.
- Know your party. Up to 12 people on two pads per reservation.
- Be logged in at camping.bcparks.ca before 7am PT. Check your account works the day before.
- Remember the window. Berg Lake opens all at once, but the rest of BC Parks still works on the rolling three-month window, so your other summer BC trips open on their own dates.
The 14-day rule, and when pads come back
BC Parks' cancellation windows page has a separate row for Berg Lake:
| When you cancel | What you get back |
|---|
| More than 14 days before arrival | Full refund of camping fees for the cancelled nights, minus a $6 cancellation fee per tent pad |
| Within 14 days of arrival | Removing nights or changing your arrival date costs up to 2 nights' camping fees per person. Cancelled trips get no refund |
Transaction fees are never refunded. You can cancel any time until 3pm on your arrival date, but inside 14 days you get nothing back for a whole trip.
That rule creates a pattern. Most people who booked in December and can't go have a strong reason to cancel before the 14-day mark. So the days around 15 days out from each date are when we'd expect sold-out pads to reappear. A second, smaller wave comes from people whose plans fall apart later and cancel anyway, and from itinerary changes that free up one camp on one night.
This is our reading of the rule, not a measured pattern. We'll publish what we actually see once a season of data is in.
If you miss out on opening day
Sold out doesn't mean no pads all summer. It means someone has every pad right now. Over a four-month season, groups shrink, plans change, and people who booked several date options drop the ones they don't need.
Canada Camp Alerts watches the Berg Lake Trail for you. Set a watch on that page for the nights you want, and we'll alert you when a night goes from booked out to open. A night counts as open when any camp on the trail has a free pad, judged night by night. We don't check that the same camp is free across your whole trip, and we don't match party size, so open the BC Parks link in the alert and check the camps and pads for your itinerary. You book on camping.bcparks.ca yourself; we never book or hold anything.
- Free: one watch for one night, by email, sent 15 minutes after season-pass holders get it.
- Season pass: C$25 once, valid 12 months, no auto-renew. Up to 10 watches, date ranges, instant alerts by email, Telegram and browser push.
We don't send release-day reminders, so put the opening day in your own calendar once BC Parks announces it. On opening morning itself our checks wait behind the same rush as everyone else; alerts are most useful from the following days onwards, as the first cancellations appear.
