ACC members book huts 180 days ahead, non-members 90. Online booking closes 7 days out. Refund rules, the Elizabeth Parker Hut application draw, and how to catch a cancellation.
Last checked: October 2026. Rules are from the Alpine Club of Canada's booking and cancellation policy and hut pages as of that date. ACC pages don't always agree with each other; where they differ, we say so.
The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) runs a network of backcountry huts across the Rockies, Selkirks and Purcells: Bow, Peyto, Asulkan, Balfour, Elizabeth Parker, Stanley Mitchell, Fairy Meadow and many more. They book through the ACC's own system, not Parks Canada or BC Parks, and the rules are different.
Booking windows
| Who | How far ahead | Notes |
|---|
| ACC members | 180 days | Bookings open at midnight Mountain Time |
| Non-members | 90 days | A member can't book for a non-member more than 90 days ahead |
| BC Provincial Parks huts (Kokanee Glacier, Conrad Kain, Elk Lakes, Silver Spray, Woodbury, Robson Pass) | 180 days for everyone | No membership needed; same rates for members and non-members |
So for a Saturday in mid-July, a member can book in mid-January; a non-member waits until mid-April. For the busiest huts in peak season, the member window is a real advantage.
The 7-day phone rule
Online booking closes within 7 days of the stay, according to the ACC's main hut information. Inside that window you call the ACC office on 403-678-3200 to check availability or book. Some older ACC pages give 3 or 5 days instead; treat 7 as the current rule unless the hut page says otherwise.
This matters if you're hoping for a last-minute cancellation: a bed that frees up inside the last week can't be booked online. You'd have to phone.
Refunds and cancellations
From the ACC's booking and cancellation policy for backcountry huts:
| When you cancel | Refund |
|---|
| More than 15 days before the first night | 75% of the reservation fee (a 2.4% fee applies to credit-card refunds) |
| 15 days or fewer before | No refund |
Also:
- A 3.6% administration fee may apply to cancellations and changes.
- Changes count as cancellations, on the same terms.
- No credits or deferrals.
- No refunds for weather, wildlife, wildfire, closures or similar.
When beds come back
The 15-day line is the obvious cliff: anyone who knows they can't go recovers 75% by cancelling before it, and nothing after. So we'd expect cancellations to cluster around 16 days before each date. A second, smaller set appears inside 15 days from people who cancel anyway, but from day 7 those can only be booked by phone. This is our reading of the policy, not measured data.
The ACC also announces some last-minute cancellations in its weekly "Hut Insider" email, according to our research notes. Sign up on the ACC site if you're hunting a specific hut.
The Elizabeth Parker Hut draw
The Elizabeth Parker Hut sits in the Lake O'Hara area of Yoho National Park (24 beds in summer, 20 in winter). Because demand is so high, summer stays are allocated by an application draw rather than first come, first served.
From the ACC's Elizabeth Parker Hut page, as of October 2026:
- Applications are accepted October 1 to November 30, with booking order assigned randomly after the window closes.
- Apply through the ACC member portal. Non-members can apply after creating a free account. You must be 18 or older.
- The application fee covers processing only. It's non-refundable and isn't a payment toward your stay.
- Selected applicants then book and pay at standard rates. Being selected doesn't guarantee particular dates.
- Some dates are set aside for ACC Sections and ACC Adventures trips.
- Lottery bookings follow the standard cancellation policy above.
Conflicting dates. Earlier ACC pages described a different timeline: a lottery open December 2, 2024 to January 13, 2025, and for summer 2026, ticket sales until January 30 with winners contacted from February 1, 2026. Parks Canada's Lake O'Hara page says summer bookings are made by lottery "the previous fall". The ACC hut page's October 1 to November 30 window is the current one as of our check, which means the draw for summer 2027 may be open right now. Confirm on the ACC site.
Getting there. In summer you reach Lake O'Hara on the Parks Canada bus (you can book it when you reserve the hut); the hut is a 10-minute walk from the drop-off. Outside bus season it's a 12 km walk, ski or snowshoe up the road. Bikes aren't allowed. See Lake O'Hara 2027.
Huts not run by the ACC
Some well-known huts book elsewhere:
- Kees and Claire Hut (Spearhead Traverse, Whistler): Spearhead Huts Society, its own system. See Garibaldi.
- Elfin Lakes shelter (Garibaldi): BC Parks reservation service.
- Wendy Thompson Hut (ACC Whistler section): its own booking system. We don't monitor it.
- Mount Assiniboine's Naiset and Hind huts: through Assiniboine Lodge, not BC Parks, per our research.
Watching an ACC hut
Canada Camp Alerts watches several ACC huts, including the Asulkan Cabin, Elk Lakes Cabin and Balfour (Rob Ritchie) Hut. The current list is on /parks. We also watch the Kees and Claire Hut.
Set a watch on the hut's page for the nights you want. We alert you when a night goes from fully booked to having a free bed, judged night by night. We don't check that beds stay free for consecutive nights or that there are enough for your group, so open the booking link and check. Nights inside the last 7 days can only be booked by phone with the ACC. You book yourself; we never book or hold beds, and we don't enter lotteries.
- Free: one watch for one night, email, 15 minutes after pass holders.
- Season pass: C$25 once, 12 months, no auto-renew. Up to 10 watches, date ranges, instant email, Telegram and browser push.
