Banff's campgrounds all open on one Parks Canada launch morning at 8am MT. 2026's was Feb 12 (postponed). A step-by-step plan for 2027 and what to do if you miss out.
Last checked: October 2026. Parks Canada had not announced the 2027 Banff launch dates when we wrote this. 2027 dates are expected, based on 2026.
Banff's three launch mornings
Banff isn't one launch. Parks Canada opens different parts of the park on different mornings, all at 8am Mountain Time on reservation.pc.gc.ca, with a queue.
| Offer | 2026 launch | Expected 2027 |
|---|
| Banff frontcountry: Tunnel Mountain, Two Jack (Lakeside and Main), Lake Louise, Johnston Canyon, Protection Mountain, Rampart Creek, Silverhorn Creek | Originally Fri Jan 23, moved to Thu Feb 12, 2026, 8am MT | late January to mid-February |
| Banff, Kootenay and Yoho backcountry (Egypt Lake, the Skoki area, Rockwall and others) | Mon Jan 26, 2026, 8am MT | around January 25 |
| Moraine Lake and Lake Louise shuttle (40% of seats) | Wed Apr 15, 2026, 8am MT | mid-April |
Source: Parks Canada reservation launch table. The 2026 frontcountry launch was one of about thirty postponed after technical problems in January 2026. Nearby, Kootenay and Yoho frontcountry (Redstreak, Kicking Horse) launched on January 20 and Jasper on January 27.
Before launch week
1. Pick the campground for the trip you want. The Banff campgrounds suit different trips:
- Tunnel Mountain is next to the Banff townsite, with several loops (Village 1, Village 2, Trailer Court).
- Two Jack Lakeside sits on the shore of Two Jack Lake, a short drive from town, and is much smaller than Tunnel Mountain.
- Lake Louise is the base for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake (with its own tent and trailer areas).
- Johnston Canyon, Protection Mountain, Rampart Creek and Silverhorn Creek are further from town and on the Bow Valley Parkway or Icefields Parkway.
Check each campground's page on Parks Canada for site types and services before launch day, not during.
2. Make a ranked list, all inside the same launch. Since all Banff frontcountry campgrounds open on the same morning, your backup plan is on the same screen. Write down, in order:
- first choice: campground, loop, dates
- same campground, dates shifted by a day or two
- second campground, same dates
- third campground, flexible dates
3. Get your account ready. Sign in to your Parks Canada reservation account the day before, check your details and your payment card, and know your equipment type and party size.
4. Convert the time. 8am MT is 7am PT, 9am CT, 10am ET and 11am AT.
Launch morning
- Join the queue before 8am MT. Have the reservation site open on one reliable device and connection.
- When you get in, go straight to your first choice. Don't browse. If it's gone, move down your list without second-guessing.
- Book, then refine. A booked site in your second-choice campground is worth more than a perfect one you lose while deciding. You can change later, at a cost (see below).
- Don't hold several bookings you won't use. It costs you fees, and cancelling inside three days of arrival costs you the first night.
After launch morning: the cancellation rules
Parks Canada's reservation policies for frontcountry camping:
| When you cancel | What you lose |
|---|
| 3 or more days before arrival | The reservation fee and the cancellation fee ($11.50 online, $13.50 by phone) |
| Less than 3 days before arrival | Those fees plus the first night |
| No-show | Reservation fee and the first two nights (refund request within 30 days) |
Changes made three or more days ahead cost the price difference and a change fee; inside three days, the first night too.
So the three-day mark is a natural moment for people to cancel bookings they don't need. Over a whole summer, sold-out dates come back as plans change. More detail in the Parks Canada cancellation policy guide.
If you miss out
Launch morning isn't the only chance. Here's what still works:
- Watch your campground for cancellations. Canada Camp Alerts watches Two Jack Lakeside, Tunnel Mountain Village 2, and, for backcountry, Healy Creek and the whole Banff, Kootenay and Yoho backcountry. Set a watch on the facility page for your nights. We alert you when a night goes from booked out to open, meaning any site at that campground is free that night. We don't check that the same site is free for your whole stay or match party size or equipment, so check the site details on Parks Canada before you pay. You book on Parks Canada's site.
- Try a different launch. If Banff frontcountry fails, Kootenay and Yoho launched a few weeks earlier in 2026 and may still have dates; Jasper launched in between.
- Day trips instead of camping. The Moraine Lake shuttle has its own launch and a second release two days before each day. See Moraine Lake shuttle sold out.
Plans:
- Free: one watch for one night, email, 15 minutes after pass holders.
- Season pass: C$25 once, 12 months, no auto-renew. Up to 10 watches, date ranges, instant email, Telegram and browser push.
On launch morning itself, our checks queue like everyone else, so don't rely on alerts in the first hours. They earn their keep in the weeks and months that follow. We don't send launch-day reminders: add the date to your calendar when Parks Canada publishes it.
FAQ
When do Banff camping reservations open for 2027?
Not announced as of October 2026. In 2026, Banff frontcountry launched Thursday February 12 at 8am MT (moved from January 23), and the backcountry on January 26. Expect late January to mid-February 2027.
Do all Banff campgrounds open the same day?
In 2026, all seven Banff frontcountry campgrounds did. The backcountry and the shuttle had their own days.
Is there a queue?
Parks Canada's 2026 table listed a queue for Banff frontcountry, backcountry and the shuttle.
What's the hardest campground to get?
We haven't measured it yet. Two Jack Lakeside is small and on the water, so expect strong competition; Tunnel Mountain has far more sites, so your odds there are better.
What if I book and then can't go?
Cancel three or more days before arrival to lose only the fees. Inside three days you also lose the first night.
