Only 40% of Moraine Lake and Lake Louise shuttle seats go on sale in April. The other 60% drop at 8am MT two days before each day. How the release and cancellations work.
Last checked: October 2026. Details are from Parks Canada's Lake Louise and Moraine Lake shuttle page and reservation policies for the 2026 season. 2027 dates are expected, based on 2026.
Why it "sells out" in April, and why that isn't the end
Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. To get there you take a Parks Canada shuttle, a licensed commercial operator, or you're a registered Moraine Lake Lodge guest. That's why the shuttle is so contested.
But Parks Canada doesn't sell all the seats at once:
- 40% of seats go on sale on the reservation launch: Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 8am MDT, with a queue.
- The remaining 60% are released at 8am MDT two days before each departure day.
So when people say the shuttle is sold out in April, they mean the first 40%. Most seats for any given day haven't been released yet.

How to work out your release morning
Count back two days from the day you want to ride:
| Ride day | Seats released (8am MDT) |
|---|
| Saturday | Thursday |
| Sunday | Friday |
| Monday | Saturday |
| July 15 | July 13 |
8am MDT is 7am in Vancouver, 10am in Toronto.
Release-morning plan
- Be signed in to the Parks Canada reservation site a few minutes before 8am MDT.
- Know which departure window you want, and two backups.
- Know your party size. Each seat is a person.
- Book, then decide. If plans change, you can cancel up to an hour before departure and get your money back minus the fees.
Cancellations: the third chance
Parks Canada's policy for the Moraine Lake and Lake Louise shuttles:
- Cancel at least 1 hour before departure for a refund, minus the reservation and cancellation fees.
- No cancellations less than an hour before departure.
- Changes allowed until an hour before, with a change fee.
- The Alpine Start shuttle closes for changes and cancellations at 3pm the day before.
That means seats can come back at any time up to an hour before each departure, as people's plans change, weather turns or groups shrink. The day before and the morning of are when we'd expect the most, but that's our reading of the rules rather than measured data.
Other ways in
- Roam Public Transit: a Roam Reservable Super Pass gives free access to the Lake Connector, and Roam Route 8X runs year-round to the Lake Louise Lakeshore, per Parks Canada. That gets you to Lake Louise and on the Connector to Moraine Lake.
- Licensed commercial operators: Parks Canada lists them as a way to reach Moraine Lake.
- Stay at Moraine Lake Lodge. Registered guests can use the road.
- Camp at Lake Louise. It doesn't give you road access, but it puts you near the Park and Ride. See the Banff launch-day playbook.
Watching the shuttle
Canada Camp Alerts watches the Moraine Lake and Lake Louise shuttle. It's judged day by day: a day counts as open when Parks Canada shows a reservable seat on it. Set a watch on the facility page for the days you want. We alert you when a day goes from booked out, or not yet released, to open. So a watch covers both the 8am two-days-before release and later cancellations.
Our alert doesn't tell you which departure has the seat or how many seats there are, so open the Parks Canada link and check the time and the number of seats for your group. You book on Parks Canada's site yourself; we never book or hold seats.
- Free: one watch for one day, email, sent 15 minutes after pass holders. At 8am on release morning, 15 minutes may be too long.
- Season pass: C$25 once, 12 months, no auto-renew. Up to 10 watches, date ranges, instant email, Telegram and browser push.
We don't send release-morning reminders. For a known date, set your own alarm for 8am MDT two days before.
