How Tunnel Mountain Village 2 books: year-round electrical sites, the Parks Canada launch day at 8am MT, the 3-day refund rule and how to catch a cancelled night.

About
Tunnel Mountain is the big campground complex just outside the Town of Banff, and Village 2 is its electrical campground. Village 1 (618 unserviced sites with showers) and the Trailer Court (322 full-hookup sites) are next door, but they're separate campgrounds with their own reservations and shorter seasons. Village 2 is the one that stays open all year, which makes it the default for RVs, trailers and winter campers.
The sites
Parks Canada's 2026 listing for Tunnel Mountain Village II:
- 209 sites, plus 21 oTENTiks
- Electrical service: 15, 30 and 50 amp
- RVs up to 12 m (40 ft) on electrical sites
- Drinking water, flush toilets, cooking and picnic shelters, fire pits, a dump station and accessible facilities. The notes mention washrooms and showers with hot and cold water; confirm showers when you book.
- Season: reservable sites open year-round; oTENTiks reservable May 7 to October 12, 2026
- Not designed for tent camping in summer: tenters are better off at Village 1 or Two Jack Lakeside
Wildlife attractants have to be locked away under Banff's "Bare Campsite" programme, and park-wide fire bans can come in at short notice.
How booking works
Banff's frontcountry campgrounds all open on one launch day on the Parks Canada reservation site (reservation.pc.gc.ca, or 1-877-RESERVE). In 2026 the launch was Thursday, February 12 at 8 am MT, a new date after a postponement, with a virtual queue. The whole season goes on sale at once.
The 2027 launch hasn't been announced. Expect late January or February at 8 am MT, based on 2026, and check the Parks Canada launch table.
A reservation costs $11.50 online or $13.50 by phone, non-refundable. You can book a frontcountry site up to 2 pm on the day of arrival at most campgrounds.
How fast it sells out
Village 2 has more sites than Two Jack Lakeside, but it's the only year-round electrical campground near town, so July and August, long weekends and summer Saturdays still fill early on launch day and after. Winter and shoulder-season nights tend to be much easier.
When cancellations appear
Parks Canada's 3-day rule drives it:
- cancel at least 3 days before arrival: camping fees back, minus the reservation fee and the $11.50 online ($13.50 phone) cancellation fee
- cancel inside 3 days (before 11 am the day after arrival): you lose the first night as well
- no-shows not checked in by 11 am the day after arrival are cancelled
Expect cancellations to cluster in the days before the 3-day mark, plus a trickle of no-shows and last-minute drops in the final days.
Watching it with Canada Camp Alerts
Watch Tunnel Mountain Village 2 for your nights. A night counts as open when any bookable campsite in the campground is free, and each night is judged separately. We alert you, you book on the Parks Canada site. We don't match a specific site across your stay, check rig length or power needs, or hold the site, so check the site details before you pay.
The free plan covers one watch with email alerts 15 minutes after season-pass holders. The season pass is C$25 once for 12 months (no auto-renew): up to 10 watches, instant alerts, Telegram and web push.
Tips
- Check your rig fits. Up to 12 m on electrical sites; the alert doesn't know your length.
- Book a fallback. Grab what you can on launch day and watch for the nights you really want.
- Think about the off-season. Village 2 is reservable year-round, and nights outside summer tend to be far less contested.
