How Banff, Kootenay and Yoho backcountry permits book on one launch day at 8am MT, the 3-day refund rule, and how to catch any cancelled night in the system.

About
Banff, Kootenay and Yoho national parks share one backcountry reservation offer on the Parks Canada system, covering the designated campgrounds along routes like Egypt Lake, the Skoki area and the Rockwall. This page is our "all sites" watch: instead of following one campground, it follows the whole system and tells you when a night opens anywhere in it.
That's useful in two cases:
- you're flexible about where you go and just want a night (or a few) in the Rockies backcountry
- you're watching a specific campground too, and want to know when cancellations are moving at all
If you need a particular campground, set a watch on it as well, such as Healy Creek on the Egypt Lake route. Lake O'Hara is booked separately and isn't part of this offer.
Backcountry rules (Banff)
From Parks Canada's Banff backcountry page (Kootenay and Yoho publish their own pages; check the park you're going to):
- A backcountry permit is required for every overnight trip, with advance reservations. Carry a copy.
- A national park pass is needed to enter.
- Up to three consecutive nights per campground.
- Up to 10 people and 5 tents per reservation, 4 people and 1 tent per tent pad.
- Fires only in shared metal fire rings, where allowed.
- Random camping is only allowed in designated areas, at least 5 km from any trailhead or designated campground, with a bear-resistant food container from April 1 to November 15. Random-camping permits are bought in person at the Banff or Lake Louise visitor centres or by phone, not online.
- The Egypt Lake and Bryant Creek shelters are closed until further notice.
How booking works
The whole season opens on one launch day on reservation.pc.gc.ca (or 1-877-737-3783). In 2026 that was Monday, January 26 at 8 am MT, behind a virtual queue. Hikers build multi-night itineraries campground by campground, so the popular routes get booked as whole blocks on launch morning.
The 2027 date hasn't been announced. Expect late January at 8 am MT, based on 2026. A non-refundable reservation fee ($11.50 online, $13.50 by phone) applies.
How fast it sells out
The classic routes and their key campgrounds sell out on launch day for July and August weekends. Less famous campgrounds, midweek nights and the shoulder season (June and late September, snow permitting) are where you'll find space later.
When cancellations appear
Parks Canada's backcountry cancellation rule:
- 3 or more days before arrival: refund of camping fees, less the reservation fee and an $11.50 online ($13.50 phone) cancellation fee
- under 3 days, but before 2 pm on the arrival day: the first night is forfeited as well
- changes and cancellations close at 2 pm on the arrival day
Because one booked itinerary often holds several campgrounds, a single cancellation can free up a run of nights along a route. Weather, snow lingering on high passes, and trail closures or warnings (see the Banff bulletins) are common reasons people let go.
Watching it with Canada Camp Alerts
Watch the Banff, Kootenay and Yoho backcountry for the nights you want. A night counts as open when any campground in the system has space on it; each night is judged on its own. That's broad by design, so the open spot might be in a different park from the one you had in mind. Check which campground opened on the Parks Canada site, and check every night of your itinerary there before you pay. We don't match a route, a campground sequence or party size, and we don't book or hold anything.
Free: one watch, email alerts 15 minutes after season-pass holders. Season pass: C$25 once for 12 months (no auto-renew), up to 10 watches (enough for the all-sites watch plus the campgrounds on your route), instant alerts, Telegram and web push.
Tips
- Have a plan B route. If your first-choice route is gone on launch day, book a second-choice itinerary you can cancel under the 3-day rule.
- Mind the three-night limit per campground when stitching nights together.
- Check conditions. High passes can hold snow into the summer; read the trail conditions page before committing.

No. Lake O'Hara camping in Yoho has its own launch day and its own 3:30 pm day-before cancellation cutoff.
