How Banff's campgrounds, backcountry permits and the Moraine Lake shuttle book on Parks Canada's launch days at 8am MT, and when cancellations come back.
Last checked: October 2026, against Parks Canada's reservation launch dates, reservation policies, Banff camping page, backcountry page and Lake Louise and Moraine Lake shuttle page.
About the park
Banff National Park, in the Alberta Rockies, has some of the most sought-after reservations in Canada: lakeside campgrounds, backcountry permits and the shuttle to Moraine Lake. Everything books through Parks Canada (reservation.pc.gc.ca, or 1-877-RESERVE), and you need a national park pass on top of any reservation.
What we watch in Banff
Banff has many other frontcountry campgrounds (Tunnel Mountain Village 1, Two Jack Main, Johnston Canyon, Lake Louise and more) that we don't watch yet.
How booking works
Banff doesn't use a rolling window. Each offer opens its whole season on one launch day, at 8 am MT, behind a virtual queue. In 2026:
| Offer | 2026 launch |
|---|
| Banff, Kootenay and Yoho backcountry | Monday, January 26, 8 am MT |
| Banff frontcountry campgrounds | Thursday, February 12, 8 am MT (new date) |
| Lake Louise and Moraine Lake shuttle | Wednesday, April 15, 8 am MT (40% of seats) |
The shuttle then releases the other 60% of seats at 8 am MDT two days before each departure day.
The 2027 dates haven't been announced. Expect the same pattern, based on 2026, and check the Parks Canada launch table in the new year. Reservations cost $11.50 online or $13.50 by phone ($3.50 / $5.50 for day-use reservations like the shuttle), and that fee isn't refunded.
When it books out
Summer weekends at the small, scenic campgrounds such as Two Jack Lakeside, the classic backcountry routes in July and August, and sunrise shuttle departures to Moraine Lake go first, usually on launch morning. Weeknights, the shoulder season and winter at Tunnel Mountain Village 2 are much easier.
Getting a cancelled spot
Parks Canada's rules decide when spots come back:
- Campgrounds and oTENTiks: cancel at least 3 days before arrival for a refund less the reservation fee and the $11.50 online ($13.50 phone) cancellation fee. Inside 3 days, the first night is forfeited. No-shows are cancelled at 11 am the day after arrival.
- Backcountry: the same 3-day rule; changes and cancellations close at 2 pm on the arrival day.
- Shuttle: change or cancel up to 1 hour before your departure window.
That puts the busiest cancellation windows just before the 3-day mark for camping, and the day before and morning of for the shuttle.
We watch the facilities above and alert you when a night (or, for the shuttle, a day) turns open: when any bookable unit is free on it. Alerts are per facility per night. We don't match a specific site across nights, party size or vehicle, and we don't book or hold anything, so you still book it yourself on the Parks Canada site. The free plan gives one watch with email alerts 15 minutes after season-pass holders; the season pass is C$25 once for 12 months, no auto-renew, with up to 10 watches and instant alerts by email, Telegram or web push.
