How to book the ACC's Balfour (Rob Ritchie) Hut on the Wapta traverse: 180/90-day windows, the 7-day phone rule, the 15-day refund line and cancellations.
About
The Rob Ritchie Hut, still known to most people as Balfour Hut, is one of the Alpine Club of Canada's Wapta Icefield huts. It sits on low rocky hills at the toe of the Vulture Glacier, about 28 km northwest of Lake Louise. It's a key stop on the Wapta traverse, the classic hut-to-hut glacier route along the Continental Divide, and the base for climbing Mount Balfour.
The ACC lists the hut as just inside Banff National Park; we group it with Yoho because the Wapta huts sit on the Banff–Yoho boundary.
The hut
From the ACC's Rob Ritchie (Balfour) Hut page:
- Capacity: 18 in summer (the ACC lists 16 for winter)
- Propane lights and stove; no heat source and no oven
- Mattresses; water from a glacial stream; outhouse
- Open all year
Getting there: every route is a glaciated mountaineering approach.
- From the north (most popular): from Peyto Hut via the Olive–St. Nicholas col. The ACC gives 6–8 hours from Peyto in summer and 5–6 in winter, and 3–5 hours from Bow Hut in summer.
- From the south: from Scott Duncan Hut, about 10 km over the Balfour High Col, 5–6 hours in winter. The ACC calls this one of the most demanding routes for terrain and navigation and recommends stable snow and good visibility.
You need glacier travel and avalanche skills and gear. In summer it's a scrambling and mountaineering hut; in winter, ski touring and ski mountaineering.
Rates (as listed by the ACC, subject to change): members from C$50 per night, non-members C$60.
How booking works

When it sells out
Traverse parties book the whole chain of huts at once. Because a traverse needs consecutive nights at different huts, one full night at Balfour can break a whole plan. Weekends go first.
How to get a cancellation
The ACC's refund rules for backcountry huts:
- Cancel more than 15 days before the first night: 75% refund (2.4% processing fee on card refunds)
- 15 days or less: no refund
- No refunds for weather, wildlife or closures; changes count as cancellations, and a 3.6% admin fee may apply
Glacier trips depend on weather and conditions, and with no refund inside 15 days, most cancellations come before that line. Inside 7 days, any opening can only be booked by phone.
Watch Balfour Hut on Canada Camp Alerts and we'll email you when a night you picked goes from full to bookable. We read the hut's public booking calendar, and a night counts as open when any space is free; each night is judged on its own. We don't match your party size, don't check the other huts on your route, and don't hold or book anything.
The free plan covers one watch, with email alerts 15 minutes after we spot the opening. The season pass (C$25 once, 12 months, no auto-renew) gives up to 10 watches with instant alerts by email, Telegram or web push, so you can watch the Balfour night of your traverse along with other dates.
Tips
- Book the bottleneck first. On a traverse, secure the hardest-to-get hut night and build around it.
- Have a weather plan. No refund for weather inside 15 days means you're paying for the night either way.
- Keep your party small. A cancellation is more likely to free 2 spaces than 8.
