How Pinery's year-round Riverside Area 1 books on Ontario Parks' 5-month window, the 4-month cancellation block and penalty ladder, and how to catch a freed-up site.

About
Pinery Provincial Park is on Lake Huron near Grand Bend, with 10 km of sand beach and about 21 km² of rare oak savanna and coastal dune. It's a big car-camping park, with 1,010 campsites (474 electrical) across three campgrounds: Riverside, Burley and Dunes.
Riverside sits beside the provincially significant Old Ausable Channel and is split into four areas. Area 1 is the one this page covers: it's open year-round, which makes it Pinery's winter camping option, and it's also where the park's yurts are.
The campground
From Ontario Parks:
- Riverside has electrical, non-electrical and pull-through sites, with water taps, comfort stations and laundry in each area
- Area 1: open year-round; home to the Riverside yurts
- Area 3: radio-free. Area 4 (Dunes): pet-free
- Burley and Dunes campgrounds run May to September only
- Pinery's 2026 operating dates: January 1 to December 31, with 38 km of groomed cross-country ski trails in winter
- Use the boardwalks to reach the beach; the dunes are fragile
- Car campsites take up to six people; check-in after 2 pm, check-out before 2 pm
Roofed options nearby: the year-round yurts (sleep 6, heated, 2-night minimum, 3 on long weekends; Ontario Parks' page gives both 6 and 12 as the count, so confirm) and 8 rustic cabins (sleep 5, 2-night minimum). They're not part of this watch.
How booking works
Ontario Parks uses a 5-month rolling window on reservations.ontarioparks.ca (or 1-888-668-7275, 7 am to 9 pm ET). You can book up to five months before your arrival date; the Ontario Parks example is that July 29–31 arrivals first become available on March 1 at 7:00 am ET.
There's a non-refundable reservation fee. Ontario Parks limits stays to 23 consecutive nights, with 7- or 14-night limits at some parks between July 1 and the Saturday of Labour Day weekend; check the rules page for Pinery.
How fast it sells out
A 10 km beach in southwestern Ontario makes Pinery's summer weekends and long weekends hard to get, especially for electrical sites. Expect those nights to go soon after their 5-month date opens. Winter is the opposite: Burley and Dunes are closed, Riverside Area 1 is the year-round option, and off-season nights are generally much easier.
When cancellations appear
Ontario Parks' rules:
- No changes or cancellations more than 4 months before arrival
- After that, a penalty of 10% to 50% of campsite fees, depending on how long you've held the booking (10% at 1 month or less, rising 10 points per month, 50% beyond 4 months). Minimum $7.52 + HST online or $9.29 + HST by phone.
- Cancelling after 12:00 pm ET on the arrival day adds a one-night penalty
So look for freed-up sites at the 4-month mark, when early bookings can first be cancelled, and in the last week or two before a date, when weather forecasts come in. The penalty grows the longer a booking is held, which nudges people who know they can't go to cancel early.
Watching it with Canada Camp Alerts
Watch Pinery Riverside Area 1 for your nights. Each night is checked on its own, and it counts as open when any bookable campsite in Area 1 is free. We don't match electrical sites, the same site across nights, party size or trailer length, and we don't book or hold anything, so check the site on Ontario Parks before you pay.
Free plan: one watch, email alerts, 15 minutes after season-pass holders. Season pass: C$25 once for 12 months, no auto-renew, with up to 10 watches, instant alerts, Telegram and web push.
Tips
- Mark the 5-month date at 7 am ET for your arrival day.
- Try winter. Area 1 runs all year, and the ski trails are right there.
- Need power? Our alert can't tell you whether the open site is electrical, so check before booking.
