How Killbear's Kilcoursie campground books on Ontario Parks' 5-month window, why nothing can be cancelled more than 4 months out, and how to catch a freed-up site.

About
Killbear Provincial Park is on Georgian Bay, at 35 Eddie Ramsay Parkway in Nobel, Ontario, and Ontario Parks sells it on its Georgian Bay sunsets. It's a big park, with 886 campsites in seven campgrounds, and Ontario Parks says most sites are less than a five-minute walk from the shore. That's exactly why summer at Killbear is so hard to book.
Kilcoursie is one of the seven campgrounds, and one of four with electrical sites (with Beaver Dams, Lighthouse Point and Harold Point). On the Ontario Parks booking map it has 98 sites.
The park and campground
From Ontario Parks:
- 2026 main season: May 8 to November 2 (Ontario Parks also lists winter operating dates, January 8 to March 22, 2027)
- Park-wide: 886 campsites, 252 electrical, 457 radio-free, 33 RV pull-throughs and 3 group sites
- Facilities: 8 comfort stations with showers, 7 laundromats and 7 vault privies across the park, plus two dog beaches
- Car campsites take up to six people. Check-in is after 2 pm and check-out before 2 pm.
How booking works
Ontario Parks runs a 5-month rolling window: you can reserve up to five months before your arrival date, on reservations.ontarioparks.ca or by phone at 1-888-668-7275 (7 am to 9 pm ET). The window moves forward a day at a time; Ontario Parks' own example is that July 29–31 arrivals first become available on March 1 at 7:00 am ET. So the date you want opens at 7 am Eastern, five months ahead.
A non-refundable reservation fee applies to every booking. Stays at Ontario parks are limited to 23 consecutive nights, and some parks have a 7- or 14-night limit between July 1 and the Saturday of Labour Day weekend; check the rules for Killbear.
How fast it sells out
July and August are the hard part. Only 252 of Killbear's 886 sites have power, so expect Kilcoursie's summer nights, and its electrical sites in particular, to go soon after their 5-month window opens. Spring and fall weekdays are generally much easier.
When cancellations appear
Ontario Parks' cancellation rules shape when sites come back:
- No changes or cancellations more than 4 months before arrival. Someone who booked at 5 months can't let go of a site until the 4-month mark.
- After that, the penalty is a percentage of campsite fees based on how long the booking has been held: 10% (1 month or less), 20%, 30%, 40%, up to 50% (more than 4 months). The minimum is $7.52 + HST online, $9.29 + HST by phone.
- Cancel after 12:00 pm ET on the arrival day and a one-night penalty is added.
That gives two windows to watch: the 4-month mark, when early bookers can first cancel, and the final week or two, when weather and plans change. Since the penalty climbs every month a booking is held, people whose plans change have a reason to cancel sooner rather than later.
Watching it with Canada Camp Alerts
Watch Kilcoursie for the nights you want. A night counts as open when any bookable site in the campground is free on it; each night is judged separately. We don't match electrical or non-electrical sites, the same site across your stay, party size or trailer length, and we don't book or hold anything, so check the site details on Ontario Parks before you pay.
The free plan covers one watch with email alerts, 15 minutes after season-pass holders. The season pass is C$25 once for 12 months (no auto-renew): up to 10 watches, instant alerts, Telegram and web push.
Tips
- Count back five months. Mark the morning your arrival date opens at 7 am ET.
- Book a fallback you can cancel later. Remember the 4-month block, and that the penalty grows the longer you hold.
- Watch the other campgrounds too. Our watch covers Kilcoursie only; other Killbear campgrounds book separately on the same site.
