How Stormhaven's 9 tent platforms on the Bruce Trail book: the Parks Canada launch at 8am ET, winter camping, the no-cancel-after-permit rule, and catching a cancellation.

About
Stormhaven is one of the two backcountry campgrounds in Bruce Peninsula National Park, on the Bruce Trail along the Georgian Bay shoreline. The other is High Dump, which takes longer to reach. You reach both only by backpacking: there's no road in, and Parks Canada advises leaving at least 3 hours before sunset for Stormhaven (6 hours for High Dump), because the trail is rugged.
Stormhaven also stays open all winter, unlike High Dump, which closes for the season.
The sites
From Parks Canada's backcountry page:
- 9 campsites, each with a wooden tent platform; you need a free-standing tent, and everything has to stay on the platform (no hanging hammocks from trees)
- Maximum 4 people per campsite
- A shared composting toilet
- No water: carry your own or filter or boil bay water
- Food storage: hang food and scented items on the poles provided to deter bears
- No campfires, so bring a cook stove
- Wash with biodegradable soap 30 m back from the shoreline, and pack out all garbage
Trail access is from Cyprus Lake (parking lot 2), Halfway Log Dump (Emmett Lake Road) or Crane Lake Road. The Halfway Log Dump and Crane Lake Road access points close in winter, and spring runoff or heavy rain can flood parts of Crane Lake Road.
How booking works
Book on reservation.pc.gc.ca or by phone at 1-877-RESERVE. On arrival day you check in in person at the Cyprus Lake Campground Office or the Emmett Lake kiosk, pay any vehicle and day-use fees, and pick up your permits. Overnight parking is charged per vehicle per night, on top of the camping permit (per person per night), park admission and the reservation fee.
Two release dates matter:
- Summer season: in 2026, Cyprus Lake and the backcountry opened on Monday, February 2 at 8 am ET. The 2027 date isn't announced; expect early February, based on 2026.
- Winter season: the December 15, 2026 to April 30, 2027 winter camping season opens for reservations on Tuesday, November 17, 2026. The Cyprus Campground Office handles winter check-in from November 1 to April 30.
How fast it sells out
Summer is busy here: Parks Canada says popular spots such as the Grotto and Halfway Log Dump need planning and a reservation. With only 9 platforms, Stormhaven's summer weekends and long weekends go quickly after launch. Weeknights and the shoulder seasons are easier, and winter is a niche of its own.
When cancellations appear
Before you check in, Parks Canada's backcountry rule applies:
- cancel at least 3 days before arrival: camping fees back, minus the reservation fee and the $11.50 online ($13.50 phone) cancellation fee
- cancel inside 3 days, before 2 pm on the arrival day: you also lose the first night
- backcountry bookings can be made or changed until 2 pm on the arrival day
Once your permits are issued at check-in, no cancellations are allowed. So the window for a freed-up platform is before the arrival day, especially just before the 3-day mark, plus any no-shows.
Watching it with Canada Camp Alerts
Watch Stormhaven for your nights. A night counts as open when any of the Stormhaven platforms is free, and each night is checked on its own. We don't match a platform across nights or check group size, and we don't hold anything; you book on the Parks Canada site.
Free plan: one watch, email alerts 15 minutes after season-pass holders. Season pass: C$25 once for 12 months (no auto-renew), with up to 10 watches, instant alerts, Telegram and web push.
Tips
- Start early. Leave at least 3 hours before sunset, and allow for the rough shoreline trail.
- Pack water. There's none at the site.
- Try winter. Stormhaven is open all winter; book from November 17, 2026 for the 2026–27 season.
