About
Wedgemount Lake is the steep one. It's a glacial lake in the north of Garibaldi Provincial Park, circled by the Wedgemount and Armchair glaciers, and the trail up to it is one of the hardest standard hikes near Whistler. People who make the climb usually want to stay the night, which is why the small campground at the top books up.
The trailhead is off Highway 99, 13 km north of Whistler. You turn right, cross an uncontrolled railway crossing, and drive 2 km of forest service road to the parking lot.
The sites
From the BC Parks Wedgemount Lake page:
- 20 tent pads: 10 at each of the two locations
- A year-round pit toilet near the hut, plus a second one near the lake sites in summer
- A hut that is for emergency use only, so it isn't somewhere to sleep
- No garbage facilities, so pack out what you pack in
The trail is 7 km with 1,200 m of elevation gain, and BC Parks suggests 4 to 6 hours one way. The last stretch climbs over boulders that get slippery when wet. In winter the lakeshore outhouse is removed because of avalanche risk. BC Parks says to camp at the upper campground near the hut and follow the reroute over the first 1.5 km of trail. Campfires and dogs aren't allowed anywhere in Garibaldi Park.
How booking works
Every overnight stay in Garibaldi Park needs a reservation, made on camping.bcparks.ca or by phone at 1-800-689-9025.
- Window: three months before arrival, opening at 7am PT on the first day of the window. A new date opens each morning.
- Same day: you can book until 5pm PT on the arrival date if there's space.
- Fees (per person per night, as of October 2026): adults C$25, youths 6–15 C$5, children under 6 free. You also pay a C$6 transaction fee per tent pad per night (C$18 maximum) and the C$20 non-resident fee if you live outside BC.

When it sells out
With only 20 pads, there isn't much to go around. BC Parks doesn't publish sell-out times. Summer weekends and long weekends are the nights to expect gone first, and fair-weather midweek nights in August aren't far behind. The 1,200 m climb keeps some people away, but it also means the ones who book are committed and less likely to cancel on a whim.
How to get a cancellation
Wedgemount uses the Garibaldi cancellation windows. Cancel more than 7 days before arrival and you get a full refund of camping fees, minus C$6 per tent pad. Within 7 days you lose one night's fee per person, and on the arrival date two nights' fees. Cancellations close at 5pm PT on the arrival date.
That makes the run-up to the 7-day mark the main time pads come back. Another wave comes when a forecast turns bad, since a wet boulder field and fog at the lake change people's minds.
Watch Wedgemount Lake on Canada Camp Alerts and we'll tell you when a booked-out night opens up. Alerts are per night: a night counts as open when any tent pad is free on it. We don't hold the pad or book it for you. The free plan is one watch with email alerts 15 minutes late. The season pass is C$25 once for 12 months, with no auto-renew. It gives up to 10 watches and instant alerts by email, Telegram or web push.
Tips
- Check the weather and snow before you go. Snow lingers at the lake well into summer, and BC Parks recommends poles and micro-spikes in winter conditions.
- A camping reservation replaces a day-use pass wherever one is required in Garibaldi Park.
- If you get an alert for one night of a two-night trip, book what's open and keep watching the other night.

Questions
How many tent pads are at Wedgemount Lake?
BC Parks lists 20: 10 at each of the two camping locations, the upper one near the hut and the other by the lake.
Can I stay in the Wedgemount hut?
No. BC Parks says the hut at Wedgemount Lake is for emergency use only. You need a tent pad reservation.
When does Wedgemount Lake open for booking?
Three months before your arrival date, at 7am Pacific Time, on camping.bcparks.ca. The window rolls forward one day each morning.
Does an alert mean my whole party fits?
Not necessarily. A night counts as open when any tent pad is free on it. We don't check party size, so check the booking page before you count on it.
