About
Og Lake Campground is the second camp in the core area of Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, on the B.C.–Alberta border about 48 km southwest of Banff. Assiniboine Lodge puts it about 5 km from Lake Magog. BC Parks lists Og and Magog together as "extremely popular backcountry camping destinations".
There's no road access: you hike or ski in, or fly in on the lodge helicopter with a campground reservation.
The sites
Og Lake is a tent-pad backcountry campground. Fires are prohibited in the core area, so cook on a stove. Assiniboine Lodge lists Og Lake as serviced from June 20 to October 1 in 2027. BC Parks caps any one park at 14 nights per person per calendar year.
How booking works
Og Lake books through camping.bcparks.ca or the BC Parks call centre (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT; phone bookings carry a C$5 fee). Last checked: October 2026.
- Window: up to three months before arrival, opening at 7 a.m. PT. It used to be four months, so older guides are out of date.
- Reservation period: Assiniboine Lodge lists June 26 to September 30 for Og Lake, Magog and Porcupine. Outside that, backcountry permit registration is required, up to two weeks ahead. Confirm on BC Parks before an off-season trip, because some older pages say Og needs a reservation all year.
- Fees: C$25 per adult per night, C$5 per youth (6–15), and a C$20 non-resident fee per trip. BC Parks says Assiniboine fees are increasing, so check the reservations page.
Helicopter: the lodge helicopter flies campers who hold a confirmed BC Parks reservation; BC Parks lists Wednesday, Friday and Sunday flights. Book the camp first.
When it sells out
Summer weekends in the core area are in heavy demand and each night opens exactly three months ahead. Expect July and August weekends to go on their opening morning, with midweek and September nights the easier pick.
How to get a cancellation
Mount Assiniboine uses the BC Parks backcountry cancellation rules it shares with Garibaldi and Golden Ears:
- More than 7 days out: full refund of camping fees, minus C$6 per tent pad.
- Within 7 days: one night per person is kept.
- Arrival day: two nights per person are kept; cancellations close at 5 p.m.
So watch the days just before the 7-day line, and the final week, when weather and smoke change people's plans.
You can watch Og Lake on Canada Camp Alerts and get an alert when a sold-out night has a free tent pad. Each night is judged on its own: we don't match the same pad across your trip or your party size, and we don't hold or book anything. The free plan gives one watch with email alerts 15 minutes after we spot an opening. The season pass (C$25 once, 12 months, no auto-renew) gives up to 10 watches, instant alerts, and Telegram and browser push.
Tips
- If either camp would do, watch Mount Assiniboine (all sites) rather than Og alone.
- A split trip (a night at Og, then Magog) is often easier to put together than several nights at Magog.
- Check flight seats before you commit to a helicopter-day night.

Questions
How far is Og Lake from Lake Magog?
Assiniboine Lodge puts Og Lake about 5 km from Lake Magog, so it works as a base for the core area or as a stop on the way in or out.
When can I book Og Lake?
Up to three months before arrival, from 7 a.m. PT, on camping.bcparks.ca. That's the rule as of October 2026; 2027 nights are expected to follow it.
When do Og Lake cancellations show up?
Mostly just before the 7-day mark: cancel earlier and you get the camping fees back minus C$6 per tent pad; inside 7 days one night per person is kept.
Can Canada Camp Alerts watch Og Lake and Magog together?
Yes. The Mount Assiniboine (all sites) watch covers Og Lake, Lake Magog and Porcupine, and alerts when any of them has a free tent pad on a watched night.
