About
Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park sits on the B.C. side of the Alberta border, about 48 km southwest of Banff. Its core area around Lake Magog, below Mount Assiniboine, is one of the classic backcountry destinations in the Rockies, and there's no road in. Assiniboine Lodge describes itself as 26 km from the nearest road. You hike or ski in, or fly in on the lodge helicopter with a campground reservation.
The sites
This watch covers the three campgrounds BC Parks takes reservations for:
- Lake Magog: the main camp in the core area, close to the lodge.
- Og Lake: about 5 km from Lake Magog.
- Porcupine: at the base of Citadel Pass on the approach from Sunshine.
Fires are prohibited in the core area. Lodge rooms, the Naiset Huts, R.C. Hind Hut (12 places, for mountaineers) and O'Brien Meadows group camping are all booked through Assiniboine Lodge, not BC Parks, and aren't part of this watch.
How booking works
All three campgrounds book at camping.bcparks.ca or through the BC Parks call centre. Last checked: October 2026.
- Window: up to three months before arrival, opening at 7 a.m. PT. It was four months until recently.
- Reservation period: Assiniboine Lodge lists June 26 to September 30 for Magog, Og and Porcupine. Outside it, register a backcountry permit (up to two weeks ahead). Some sources say Magog and Og need a reservation all year, so confirm on BC Parks for an off-season trip.
- Fees: C$25 per adult per night, C$5 per youth (6–15), C$20 non-resident fee per trip. BC Parks says these are rising.
- Stay limit: 14 nights per calendar year in any one park.
The lodge helicopter flies campers who have a confirmed BC Parks reservation number. BC Parks lists flights on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
When it sells out
Every summer night opens exactly three months ahead at 7 a.m. PT, Expect July and August weekends to be gone on opening morning, Magog first of all. Midweek nights and September are the better bets.
How to get a cancellation
The BC Parks cancellation rules for Mount Assiniboine:
- More than 7 days out: full refund of camping fees, minus C$6 per tent pad.
- Within 7 days: one night's fee per person is kept.
- Arrival day: two nights per person are kept; cancellations close at 5 p.m.
So nights come back most often just before the 7-day mark and in the last week.
With a Mount Assiniboine watch on Canada Camp Alerts, a watched night counts as open when any of the three campgrounds has a free tent pad, and we alert you when a sold-out night opens. We don't match the same campground across your nights or your party size, and we don't hold or book anything, so check which camp opened before you book it. The free plan gives one watch with email alerts 15 minutes after we spot an opening. The season pass (C$25 once, 12 months, no auto-renew) gives up to 10 watches, instant alerts, and Telegram and browser push.
Tips
- Use this watch if you'd take any camp; watch Lake Magog on its own if only Magog will do.
- A mixed itinerary (Porcupine on the way in, then Og or Magog) is often easier to build than several nights at one camp.
- For a helicopter trip, check flight seats as soon as a night opens.
